Description: The Elk City Sandstone aquifer extent was extracted from the OWRB data layer OWRB Major Aquifers of Oklahoma, which includes the following description: This shapefile is to be used as a general reference as to the extent of the major aquifers in Oklahoma. It was created with multiple sources of information. The scales and accuracy of these sources vary. This map layer shows the general outlines of the principal bedrock and alluvium aquifers in Oklahoma. The three main sources for aquifer boundaries were from the Oklahoma Water Resources Board, the Oklahoma State Department of Health, and the United States Geological Survey. This map layer is intended to be used for display purposes, and should not be used for local data analysis.

Description: The updated Elk City Sandstone aquifer extent was created for the Hydrologic Investigation of the Elk City Sandstone aquifer in West Oklahoma, using geologic maps and well logs from the OWRB database. The boundary is based on the geologic contact between the Elk City Sandstone and the Doxey Shale, except where the Ogallala Formations overlies the Elk City Sandstone in the northwest portion of the aquifer where the extent is based on areas where the subcropping Elk City Sandstone has been identified in well driller reports and utilized by local water users. In this area, the exent follows section lines.This dataset is tentative and pending Board approval for permitting use.

Description: This dataset represents the base of the Elk City Sandstone aquifer, which is defined as the base of the Elk City Sandstone. The elevation of the aquifer base ranges from 1700-2200 feet above mean sea level. The interpretation of the base of the aquifer is based on analysis of lithologic data obtained from groundwater well completion reports submitted to the OWRB by licensed well drillers. Control points with zero depth were added along the base of the Elk City Sandstone as shown on surficial geologic maps published by the Oklahoma Geologic Survey (OGS). The combined depth information was subtracted from a 10-meter Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the study area’s land surface. The resulting elevation dataset was used with the Kriging tool in ArcMap to interpolate the base of the aquifer across the study area. The raster was then converted to a series of contours, using the contour tool in ArcMap, which were then smoothed and manually adjusted by OWRB staff for clarity based on professional judgement. This dataset was created as a product of the Elk City Sandstone aquifer hydrologic investigation and is included here for informational purposes only.The contours were made from the base elevation raster (Base_EC_20180201_JES) in ArcMap using the Contour tool.

Description: Saturated thickness raster of the Elk City Sandstone aquifer in west Oklahoma. The raster displays the thickness of the water level (potentiometric) surface in the Elk City Sandstone aquifer to the base of the unit. Saturated thickness ranges between 0-199 feet, with an average saturated thickness of 56 feet.The map was created by subtracting the base elevation from the potentiometric surface for the Elk City aquifer. It was made in ArcMap using the Minus tool and the potentiometric surface raster (PotSurf_T2R_clip_20170526_proj_JS) and the base elevation raster (Base_EC_20180201_proj_JS). The Reclassify tool was used to reclassify negative values near the edge of the aquifer to zero.
